In Brazil, we have a tradition, or rather a culture, of carrying out philanthropic initiatives to support the most vulnerable members of society. I think I have been very fortunate in my life and now it is time to give something important back to those who are less fortunate than me. Personally, I can proudly say that I have been involved in this type of activity for a very long time. It is something that gives me great pleasure and makes me feel good. Seeing the hope that is born and the joy that is rekindled in the eyes of the people we help fills me with joy.
Among the various activities I participate in in Italy and Brazil, there are, of course, charity matches between former players. We recently organized one in São Paulo, where Romario and several other prominent names in the world of soccer were also present. The goal of the match was truly noble: to help a hospital dedicated to children with autism. It was a truly enjoyable moment, full of positive emotions.
A mission carried out a few days ago in the mountains north of Minas Gerais, about 600 kilometers from Belo Horizonte, was very demanding but equally enjoyable. We equipped ourselves with large vehicles and set off to help a people who are suffering greatly, who have nothing to eat, who live in houses without ceilings or floors. The situation was truly critical.
We brought a little love to the people, we hugged them, talked to them, and offered them words of comfort and encouragement. We also gave them food, basic necessities, and toys for the children: 300 packages thanks to the generous donations obtained through the "M30" movement—M for Mancini and 30 for the lucky number I wore on my Roma jersey—which I run together with twelve friends. This experience also gave me some unforgettable moments. It was a wonderful mission that gave me emotions that are difficult to express in words.
I believe that we former soccer champions have a duty, with our name and visibility, to convey important values to our young people. Not only values related to sport, but also values related to life, family, and money management. We should use our visibility to send important messages to our young people so that they can become decent people in their future.
My friends, making a concrete contribution so that a human being can be a little better off should be a primary goal in everyone's daily life. We always try to put our hearts into overcoming obstacles. Sometimes, even just a smile can be enough to make the world a little happier.
